Expaining SERVER

_-= Introduction =-_
Well it's been a while since I've cranked out a tutorial, so I thought it was time to get to it. During the last Spring Break I setup my first personal server (and would have had my second one up, but had some RAM issues...), and found that there really wasn't any guides out there to help people get started. Server's are dead useful, and in the following guide you'll learn how to setup your own dirt cheap.

_-= Up Front Q and A =-_
Q: What exactly is a server?
A: Simply put a server is a computer that hosts some sort of data, and makes it available for access across a LAN or the Internet.

Q: So what do I need in order to have a server?
A: You need the following things
- A high speed connection. (Cable/DSL or faster)
- Something to split your internet connection, such as router. (If you don't own a router, and you have a high speed connection I suggest you buy one off of http://newegg.com)
NOTE: you don't necessarily 'need' something to split your internet connection, but why would you only want a server to be the only thing that can get online?

Q: Isn't it really hard to setup a server?
A: No, not really. Provided you read this guide it should be relatively easy.

Q: Aren't servers really expensive?
A: No, you could pay for a hard core $1,000 server board, but actually you can build a server relatively cheap.

Q: Will my network speeds dramatically drop if I host a file?
A: No, probably not. It all depends on what you are hosting. For example if you decide it'll be fun to stream out video files, then yes that'll suck up your bandwidth. More or less though, you should be fine.

Q: Do I need an ultra fast computer to use as a server?
A: No, not at all. It's not so much the machine that is important, but the pipe that it's hooked to. As you'll read below, not much computing power is needed in order to maintain a server.

_-= Basic Requirements =-_
The following are the MINIMUM (according to my standards) requirements for a server.
- A CPU running at 233 MHz
- 64 Megs of RAM
- A Network Card (NIC)
- A 5 Gig Hard Drive (HDD)
- A 315 Watt PSU

I know now, that some of you are asking yourselves, "What about a video card or CD Drive?" Like I said before this is for a barebones server, you don't 'need' a CD Drive or Video Card. You would just borrow the CD Drive and Vide Card from your PC to install an OS, and to setup remote administration.

What I suggest, for a cheap server is the following.
- A 350 MHz Pentium II CPU
- 128 Megs of RAM
- A 10 Gig Hard Drive
- A decent NIC
- A 315 Watt PSU
- A cheap AGP Video Card (Unless the motherboard has onboard graphics.)

_-= Lets Shop =-_
There are actually two paths to travel when setting up a server. You either buy an older PC, or buy the parts to build one. Or if you just have an old PC gathering dust, then use that and move ahead to the 'Choosing an OS' section.

- If you want to just skip the whole building process and get a pre built PC, then I have one word for you. Optiplex. Yes, the little PC's who could the Dell Optiplex's. If you search ebay for 'Pentium II Optiplex', you'll find some stellar deals. I myself bought one for $20 and it came with a 4 Gig hard drive, onboard graphics, decent NIC, CD drive, 350 MHz Pentium II, and 64 Megs of RAM. (If you decide to do this, head on down to the 'Choosing an OS' section.)

- Now if you want to go the extra mile and be a man about this, then I suggest you purchase a few things off of ebay.
- 350Mhz Pentium II CPU: Costs on average $2
- A motherboard designed to use the above mentioned CPU.
NOTE: Make sure you buy a motherboard that comes with some RAM. You don't want to spend a ton of time trying to hunt down the proper RAM for it. (Trust me): Costs on average about $10
- A 315 Watt PSU: Costs about $10
- A Network Card: I've seen them as low as $5
- A 10 Gig Hard Drive: You can probably find them for about $15
- Optional: A cheap case. I suggest you just buy a refurbed one from http://newegg.com

_-= It's Building Time! =-_
Now once you've gathered your parts, hook them up. If you bought a case then take the wires with the jumpers on the ends, and attach them to their corresponding pins. You may have to do some Trial/Error work to find the right pins. However, if you decided to be cheap and skip out on buying a case, then find yourself a jumper. NOTE: If you are fresh out of jumpers go buy some from you local computer store. Now once you've got your jumper attach it to the two pins that you'd attach the leads from the Power switch of a case to. Again, you may need to use some Trial/Error work to find the right pins. (now the switch on the PSU will be the only switch for turning the machine off and on.) Another optional step, if you don't have case, is to design some sort of enclosure for the PC (You know to protect it.) Legos are always good for this. (Don't laugh, one of Google's first servers was housed in legos.)

_-= Choosing an OS =-_
Now, you have basically two choices.
- Windows: If you aren't to savvy to Linux and you don't want to learn, then I suggest you "buy" a copy of Win2k Server Edition.
- Linux: In reality, Linux is a much better choice for an OS. You can easily administrate over it via SSH, and of course everyone knows penguins are cooler than windows. I suggest you use Slackware if you are going to use Linux.

Well now that you've got a sexy new server, I bet you are looking for some cool things to do with it. So here are a few ideas for things to use it for.

- Internet Radio Station (Using shoutcast)
- Game Server
- File Server
- IRC Server

_-= My Last Hoorah =-_
This section will cover the basics of forwarding ports. First thing is first, the most important thing you need to do now that you've setup your server, is to forward the proper ports to it. Now port forwarding can be tricky business, and there have been several guides written specifically on port forwarding. However, instead of giving you some general directions. So, head on over to http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm and find your router, and follow it's guide.

INTERNET RELAY CHAT

Ok I’m going to cover 4 sections of IRC each one a little bit more complicated I'll start with installing and setting up the client then move onto the regular end user move it Channel OPering (CHOP) then go onto IRCopering the server I will be using in this tutorial is irc.gimclan.com and the client I will be using is XCHAT ok lets get cracking!

first off your going to need a client XCHAT is my personal favorite www.xchat.org or for a direct windows version download http://xchat.org/files/binary/win32/xchat-2.4.0.exe is the current version as of 9/12/04

install xchat and setup your Nick second nick user name and real name like

dynamiK
Root
Root is what I have it setup as although its probably not a good idea to run as root so you may as well just use your screen name

now go to add and it will pop up something in the network list saying "New Network" type in the name of the network in this case ShockNET
now while having ShockNET highlighted click edit
this will pop up the network editor
at the top you will see Servers hit add again and this time type in irc.gimclan.com which is as of now the only ShockNET server
*note the server will not automatically be able to where you can enter text into it so left click it once (took me a while to figure that one out...) and the options it has below are Channels to join Connect command and and Nickserv password Channels to join in this case would be #chaos-security (all channels start with #) separated by commas you can join more then one channel, mine is this #dementialtorrents, #chaos-security,#hack,#shocknet
the connect command is any commands you would like to be automatically executed when you first join the server once you have the network setup highlight the network and click connect

lets say you dont have any channels setup to join when you start you will have to join then manually which is easy simply type
/j #chaos-security

or

/j #chaos-security

first thing you should do when joining a server is register your nick
to do this type
/msg nickserv register password e-mail address
replace password with your password and e-mail address with a valid e-mail address like
/msg nickserv register j00cann0tcraxthisp4ssw0rd blueinferno@gmail.com

you will need a registered nick to CHOP and to prevent nick theft if you join a server and someone it on your registered nick simply type
/msg nickserv ghost yournick yourpassword
like
/msg nickserv ghost blueinferno j00cann0tcraxthisp4ssw0rd

a few basic commands as a regular user are

connects you to channel #channel (a channel is what a lot of people would refer to as a chatroom)

CHOPering Channel OPering
if you feel the need to make your own channel here are a few things your going to need to know
please note that for more into simply type /msg chanserv help or /msg chanserv help *command* so first your going to need to register your channel if you want to keep it you must have a registered nick to have a channel!

bans them from the server
/kline hotmask reason

allright, i've been getting a little bored lately so i decided i'd write a little textfile to show people the in's and out's of IRC. first of all, for anyone who doesn't already know, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. it is basically a way to meet up with other people with similar interests and talk in real time. i've tried to set up this tutorial to cover every aspect, starting with getting your IRC client.

in order to connect to an IRC network, you must first choose a client. choosing a client is completely personal choice, but i recommend you try out a few different ones to see which you like best. in this tutorial, i'll be using mIRC some clients are designed for windows, and others for linux. below is a list of clients, the OS they are designed for, whether they are GUI or CLI and where you can get them.

some sites even offer a jIRC (or java-irc) client so you can connect directly with your webbrowser and not have to download a client. now, after you download the client of your choice, open it and follow the instructions to put in your info. now go to www.searchirc.com and do a search for whatever kind of channel you are looking for. the good thing about IRC is that there is a channel for almost everything you can think of. when you find a channel that you want to go to (the example used is going to be #informationleak on the server irc.thedigitaldream.co.uk) go to your irc client and type /server irc.thedigitaldream.co.uk and hit enter. this will connect you to the Second_2_None network.

first thing is first. register your nickname. to do so go to your status screen and type /msg nickserv register where is your password and is your email address. it should return a message telling you to remember your password for later use. everytime you connect you will have to verify that you are the owner of that nickname by typing /msg nickserv identify

now you can either type /join #informationleak to join the channel #informationleak, or type /list to get a list of every channel on the network with people in it. join one of these channels.

Now, on the right side of the channel window there should be a list of members. you may notice that some members have special symbols along side thier names. the symbols and thier definitions follow:
@ = Operator, this can mean merely the channel operator or it can mean the network operator. operators have the power to kick or ban you from any channels they are operator of.
% = Half Operator. this person has the power to kick members and a few other things.
+ = Voiced Member. being voiced gives you no powers. it simply means that should an operator decide to mute the channel, only people who are voiced or have operator ofr half-op status will be able to type in the channel.

a few commands that you may find useful when using IRC:
/server - allows you to connect to a server, you must type the server name after the command
example: /server irc.thedigitaldream.co.uk
/join - allows you to join a channel, you must type the name of the channel after this command (note all channels start with a #)
/part - allows you to leave a channel, you must type the name of the channel after this one too.
./me - lets you use an action. for example, if you're nickname is bob typing ./me is a 1337 mofo would show in the channel as *bob is a 1337 mofo
/nick - lets you change your nickname. just type the new nickname after the command
/away - marks you as being away, you can type a brief message after this command and it will show in all channels
/msg - typing /msg and a persons nickname will let you send a message to that person
/amsg - if you don't feel like typing out a goodbye in every channel you are in, type /amsg and the your goodbye and it will post in every channel you are in at that moment.
/quit - disconnects you from the server, you can put a message after this command too.

so you want to set up your own channel? well, type /join and the name of the channel (don't forget the #). make sure you are logged into your nick and then type /amsg chanserv register congratulations, you now own an irc channel. now type /msg chanserv topic and enter what you want the topic to read when people join your room. now for some useful commands you can use as operator of your channel:
+o = add operator status
-o = remove operator status
+h = add half-op status
-h = remove half-op
+v = add voice
-v = remove voice
+m = mute channel
-m = unmute

to use any of these commands you must use them in this format. /mode X where channel is the channel you are operator in, X is the command you wish to use, and is the person you want the action to be carried out on. for muting the channel you don't need to type a nickname.

well, now you know and understand the basics of how to make your way through IRC. you will often run into a server where no one really talks in the channels, but keep searching and you're bound to find one with some cool people.

WHAT IS PROXY

Ok, here we go. This is my first tutorial, so don't expect this to be something you've never read before...

First we need to know what a proxy is. A proxy actually is nothing more than some sort of "middle man" between you and the server (web-page, ftp, ...) you want to visit or make access to. So if someone wants to trace you, it won't be easy for him (her) to find out who you are. So, in a way it's some sort of hiding your own IP. (=Not the same as ip-spoofing, that's a whole other area!!!)

So now we know what a proxy is, it's time to move a little bit forward. There are two (most used) sorts of proxy servers.

1) HTTP proxy
A HTTP (hyper text transfer protocol) proxy server is a proxy which allows you to connect to a remote server through its own "dataflow". Mostly http and sometimes ftp protocol.

2) SOCKS proxy
A SOCKS proxy server is a proxy which allows you to connect to a remote server. All protocols. (http, smpt, ftp, udp, tcp/ip, ...) Two types of SOCKS; - SOCKS V4 - SOCKS V5

I find it difficult to explain the difference between them. The things i understand, i will share with you;

SOCKS V4 is the oldest one (duhhh, version 4) but has two major weaknesses: the lack of strong identification and the requirement to recompile applications with SOCKSv4 client library. Due to the fact this is the oldest one, it is the most found one SOCKS proxy throughout the internet.
SOCKS V5 resolved the weaknesses in the previous version:
# Strong authentication
# Authentication method negotiation
# Address resolution proxy
# Proxy for UDP-based applications

It's all rather technical "mambo-jambo" to explain the real difference between them. So i'm not going into this issue any further. {also because of my lack of knowledge at this moment}

Just remember that a HTTP proxy is easy to use with your standard browser, and supports most of the protocols what you're using.
SOCKS have a -very- positive thing, they always have high anonymity, because this protocol is used for firewalls. (authenticated firewall traversal (AFT))
While using a SOCKS proxy server, the remote server actually thinks the SOCKS server is the client, and not you.
So figure out why you want to use a proxy, and choose a type which is most suitable for you.

How do you find proxy servers? Just use your browser to search some sites which offer several proxys. The best ones are the ones who let you filter out proxies. By this I mean, filter the HTTP, SOCKS proxys. So you know which one is which.

Then there is the "Anonymity" subject.
I suggest you use a high anonymity proxy. Here's why:
Everytime you visit a webpage, you leave some information at the server you're connected to. For example, if you visit www.whatever.com, you leave some 'footprints' behind. Those footprints can identify you. Which isp (internet service provider) you use, the browser u use, your ip, which site you last visited... Here are the three most common to trace you. The footprints are called "VALUES". The places where they are stored in are called "VARIABLES". If you use a high anonymity proxy it will only leave its own IP. The rest is not determined. (The proxy leaves those variables empty)

1) REMOTE_ADDR – Your IP (client = you)
2) HTTP_VIA – If you use a proxy not 'high anonymous', it will leave it's IP here. (proxy IP)
3) HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR – If you use a proxy not 'high anonymous', it will leave your IP here. (client IP)

Here's what those different types leave behind:
# Transparant Proxy
REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP
HTTP_VIA = proxy IP
HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = your IP

# Simple Anonymous Proxy
REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP
HTTP_VIA = proxy IP
HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = proxy IP

# Distorting Proxy
REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP
HTTP_VIA = proxy IP
HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = could be whatever IP

# High Anonymity Proxy
REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP
HTTP_VIA = empty (not determined)
HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = empty (not determined)

PS: Only the high anonymity proxy doesn't reveal that a proxy has been used.

A proxy looks like this (for the ones who don't know yet): xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyy
The X's are the proxys adress, and the y's are the port they use.
The x's and y's don't always have to be 3-digit numbers. (look up how a ip is built)

We have a clear picture about what a proxy actually is and what it does. {(i hope..}

I can hear you asking: "how the hell do i configure my system settings to use a proxy and not use a direct connection?" Well, that's easier than you think. Just go to your browser and find the options menu. There should be tap saying
-connection settings-
or something simular to this.
See if your browser lets you choose between HTTP, SOCKS, ... . If it doesn't, you should choose a HTTP proxy, because else you need some extra software to let you use a SOCKS proxy. I know IE (M$) doesn't have this option. Firefox does.

Next all you have to do is enter the proxys adress and port number into the specific field for the manually proxy configuration.

Most sites support the feature allowing you to see if the proxy has high anonymity or not. But to make sure you can use a program called "Accessdiver" to test those proxys for speed and anonymity. But that's a whole tutorial on its own... And most free proxys don't last for long, so make sure the proxy u use is safe.
